Yes, yes, I agree with you that a big part of why blogs work is that "users don’t have to pick their URLs." Another big part is that users don't have to create links to their URLs, i.e., there is no need for a user to maintain a TOC (or portal page) to his/her site because it is all done automatically by the blog software. It's infinitely easier than the days of desktop HTML editors, FTP software, mucking around with permissions and .htaccess files on the web server, etc., etc. I can't imagine trying to teach a random non-techie all that arcane stuff now, but that is what I did to many people -- including people over 70 years old -- in the 1990s.

Interesting view of the subject.
I have also been thinking in why people use blogging. I personally think it is due to the following reasons:

First of all it is a more relaxed way of publishing. You don't have to be that strict when typing.

Second it is new and fresh. Personal webpages have been around for a while ( remember that everyone wanted a webpage when internet spun off).

My third reason for blogging becoming so popular is focus around a subject. Many personal webpages tend to be something eye-catching but without a real topic ( Blogs is a topic so there is no need for a flashy page.)

IMHO, not having to choose a URL or not having to think of an a hierarchy is not the reason blogging has become so popular. Infact every blogger does need to know about the URL of his/her own blog (where its published, how it fits under the parent hosting-site URL, etc. So I guess theres no escape from hierarchies either. Although people might not think of them as hierarchies).

I think the real reason blogging has become so popular has more to do with the fact that the learning curve is zero (or almost zero). Anyone who has ever written an email online knows how to edit text online in a text area and publish (send/submit/done..etc) it. All other publishing tools that you mention like html editors, ftp clients, content management systems, etc. have had fairly large learning curves.
