Web 2.0 is killing homepages. Almost no one is doing websites for fun. Marketing and Ads everywhere >.

web 2.0 is just a marketing word. most of the functions and features already exists in "web 1.0". personally I try to use less javascript, ajax etc. often it's only plaything. you can create a very good webseite and assemble great ideas without most of them. in my view, the important think is usabililty and simpleness. so, I also prefer the "web 1.0" stuff.

Wikipedia is the best encyclopedia ever? You don't know even the slightest about Windows programming? Looks like my first visit to this site will also be my last...

"Perhaps I’m stretching this one, since Wikis are really moving into Web 2.0 space, but this is old enough and cool enough that I’ll include it here"

The original WikiWikiWeb at c2.com has been around for roughly ten years. I'd say Wiki's are more like Web 0.5 technology :-) It's just Perl in a CGI script.

All I'll say is Distributed Computing, especially the BOINC platform, the internet, and the web (1.0) allow this to happen, which in turn achieves great things that not even the monster of super-computers can achieve - what better way to employ all those wasted CPU cycles.

As for Wikipedia, personally it's based on the old standards, and does things (almost) properly, using good markup, and CSS. Lacking dependance on JavaScript and new fad "technologies" like AJAX. So to me qualifies as a web 1.0 site.

If you like library's online book reservations, you should see how much better the service becomes with Library Elf (free) from http://www.libraryelf.com/ . The Elf makes sure nobody in your family ever forget to return their books on time and its summary emails are very informative.

I am a very happy user of the service and recommend it without reservations (no pun intended).
